A brilliant plan to be productive — until 3% battery and stubbornness stepped in.
The day I decided to stop charging my phone at the port beside my bed and move it to the one at the far end of my room — at my reading table — I thought I was being wise, thoughtful, and intentional. I told myself it would help resuscitate my dying productivity levels. Eradicate my laziness. Make me get up in the morning. You know, grown-up stuff.
I still don’t know what was going on with me that day.
But today? Today, I can proudly say, I was stupid.
Because now I’m lying in bed, staring at my phone screen flashing red with the bold declaration: 3%. And I am slowly discovering the full depth of that so-called wise decision.
My eyes shift from the dying phone in my hand to the charger, sitting confidently in its new home — all the way across the room, where I, the Great Motivated Me, had placed it.
It’s plugged in perfectly. Cord ready. Positioned like it’s waiting for me to come and kneel before it.
I stretch out my arm, willing the cable to be long enough to reach me.
It isn’t.
Another stretch. Futile.
I sigh loudly. Dramatically. Then I flop back on the bed and begin thinking about every other stupid decision I’ve made in life , like taking tea and garri once or telling someone I liked them first. Regret now has company.
2%.
My conscience is screaming at me, “Get up! Plug it in! There may not be light in the morning!” But my body? Unbothered. It’s cocooned in comfort, held down by soft bedsheets, and held hostage by my rebellion.
I imagine myself standing up. Walking to the reading table. Plugging the phone in. Grabbing a fruit from the table. Maybe even adjusting the position of my books while I’m at it.
But imagination is cheap.
Because in reality, I’m still in bed. And now…
1%.
“F**k it,” I whisper.
I close the phone and tuck it under my pillow like it needs sleep too. Then I roll over and find a comfortable spot beside the heap of dried laundry I’ve been ignoring for two days now.
“I’ll pack my clothes tomorrow,” I mumble. Same way I’ve been saying it since Saturday.
With a mental note to change my charging arrangement in the morning, I finally allow sleep to take me.
There are other ways to cure laziness, I’m sure.
I’ll find them and implement them.
For now…
